How long does it generally take for birds to find a new bird feeder?

Sunday, March 27th, 2011
Chloe asked:

We live in a rural wooded area that is full of Chickadees, Nuthatches, Grossbeaks, Cardinals, and so forth in southwestern Michigan. We decided to just put up 2 small bird feeders w/ black oil sunflower seed. It’s been several days and we still haven’t seen any birds. It is about 25 degrees out and has been lightly snowing the past few days. How long does it usually take for them to find the feeders? THANKS~

I am getting rats on my bird feeders?

Thursday, March 17th, 2011
Renee C asked:

I put bird feeders up on a pine tree that is just outside my fence. When I go out at night, I finds a couple of rats eating the sunflowers. The other night I even saw a possum looking at the rat as if he was waiting for it to get of the feeder. I want to enjoy the birds but I don’t want to have a rodent problem. Is there any way I can do this safely for the birds. Buying a cat is not an option!

Why arent the birds coming to our feeders?

Monday, March 7th, 2011
Amanda & Tom asked:

We have three different bird feeders outside our window. Last year we had one and tons of birds came. This year I added a suet type holder, a normal bird feeder, and a woodpecker treat log. So far only the woodpeckers come and they dont even come that often! What are we doing wrong this year? It has been atleast 3 weeks since we put the feeders out.
The yard has not been changed, no new neighbords, no new pets, and the feeders hang outside a 3rd floor window (same as last year when they came) so there is no furniture changes.
I know woodpeckers can be large, but these are the small kind, just slightly larger than your average finch.

how to make a cup and saucer bird feeder?

Watch Dawg asked:

I have seen bird feeders made with cup and saucers. They’re mounted on a rod that you stick in the ground. Anybody know how to mount the cup and saucer on the rod.
