Do birds eat more from a stationary bird feeder when the temperature of the day is colder or warmer? I’m starting up bird watching and was wondering whether or not to watch on warm or cold days?

I wanted to get a bird feeder (home made one at the top of my 6 foot fence) but I was worried that the cat may eat the birds that came.
